The Aquarium of Salento tells the story of the marine biology of the Mediterranean Sea and that of the most famous shipwrecks in Salento, starting from the sinking of an ancient Roman cargo ship, along the coast of Santa Caterina (one of the three marina of Nardò), to the sinking of ships and planes in the Second World War.
Along the four exhibition halls, you can follow a path that allows the exploration from sea level up to 100 meters deep. You can also explore the Cave Aquarium (the first tank) and ‘Open Sea’ that identifies one of the most natural and cultural heritage: the submerged environment.
The typical fauna of Salento lives among terracotta objects, fragments of planking and reconstructions of portions of planes and boats. You can see fishes, crustaceans, molluscs, echinoderms and many other forms of marine life, which are periodically set free thanks to the precious support of local fishermen. This system of tanks leads the visitor to discover the colors and wonders of the sea of Salento.
