The Church of Saint Tryphon was built between 1720 and 1723 by the will of Bishop Antonio Sanfelice, on the place where there was a small oratory. The Church overlooks Salandra Square.
It’s simple façade guards a modest internal structure, consisting of a single nave and a single late Baroque altar made of stone and stucco. An 18th century painting depicts Saint Tryphon, to whom the inhabitants of Nardò turned for the liberation from an invasion of caterpillars, that had hit the city and the countryside. In the church there was also a painting of Saint Gregory Armeno, protector of the city, by the painter Ferdinando Sanfelice.
It was removed in 1959 for repair work and has never returned to its place.
