P.za S. Domenico, 73048 Nardò LE
Churches

The Church of San Domenico was originally dedicated to Santa Maria de Raccomandatis. In the second half of 1500 the Church was enlarged and granted to the Dominican Order. It is located near Salandra Square, in the heart of the municipality of Nardò.

The façade is made of the local stone called “carparo” populated by copious crowded human figures, creatures and floral elements. In 1743 it was severely damaged by a terrible earthquake that destroyed the building, with the exception of the façade. Inside, the church is richly decorated with paintings, stucco and a wonderful wooden green ceiling; by the left aisle, there is the beautiful marble altar dedicated to the ‘Madonna del Rosario’ with an oil painting from Donato Antonio D ' Orlando, painter from Nardò.

Next to the church: the Dominic convent, once lazaret, today the artistic high school.
