Churches

The church has very ancient origins and its history is intertwined with that of King Charles I of Anjou, who in 1271 donated a building to the Franciscans to be used as a convent. The church was built on the remains of this building, initially dedicated to Saint Francis of Assisi but in 1830 consecrated to the Immaculate Conception. The adjoining convent is now a private residence.

The Church of the Immaculate Conception is located in Corso Garibaldi, near the town post office.

It has an elegant façade divided into two orders, a niche with a Leccese lime stone statue of the Immaculate Conception and, inside the church, a single nave ending in the presbytery and three side altars in Baroque style. Its origins, its artistic value and the complex historical events of its construction make it a symbolic work of the evolution of the city's art and architecture.
