The church is located next to the Monastery of the Clarisse nuns, one of the oldest monastery in southern Italy, which has welcomed women from the noble and wealthy families of Nardò since the 14th century, devoted to seclusion.
The church was built in the 17th century and its decorations reflect the Baroque and the Rococo style. It has a rectangular floor plan, with a single nave and three chapels on each of the two sides (embellished with valuable paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries). The floor is in octagons of white and grey marble.
During the 18th century, the church and the convent underwent some renovation works. Great value has the staircase that leads to the first floor of the monastery beacause is a work of the Neapolitan architect Ferdinando Sanfelice (brother of Antonio Sanfelice, bishop of the diocese of Nardò in the same century).
